VIRGINIA HUMANITIES FOLKLIFE
The Virginia Folklife Program works to document, sustain, present, and support cultural traditions across the Commonwealth.
Michael Beller was enlisted by Virginia Humanities to document musicians, artists, and makers deeply rooted in folk traditions at the Virginia Folk Festival. His assignment emphasized capturing moments of connection among individuals from diverse backgrounds and their shared engagement with Virginia’s rich folk heritage. The resulting images were used in promotional and fundraising materials, and are now part of Virginia Humanities’ permanent archive.
Established in 1989 as part of Virginia Humanities—the state humanities council—the Virginia Folklife Program receives ongoing support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Virginia Folklore Society, one of the oldest state folklore societies in the country, played a key role in founding the program.
